NDDOT Announces Safety Corridors to Reduce Fatalities and Serious Injuries on Roads

Bismarck, ND - The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) announces the implementation of Safety Corridors on three sections of North Dakota highways. A Safety Corridor is a designated section of existing highway that will include enhanced safety features and an increase in law enforcement to remind drivers they are responsible for obeying all traffic laws and posted speed limits.
Two of the Safety Corridors undergoing enhancements this summer include a designated section of Highway 85 from Watford City to ND 68; and a section of Highway 52 from Brooks Junction to Velva. The third Safety Corridor is planned for the summer of 2020 on a designated section of Highway 83 from Bismarck to Washburn.
“Safety corridors are selected based on data that shows these locations have a high number of vehicle crashes,” explains NDDOT Safety Division Director Karin Mongeon. “The idea is to use engineering and technology as solutions to change dangerous driving behavior and reduce the number of crashes on state highways.”
Drivers may notice additional signage indicating reduced speed, no-passing zones, information about road conditions, and reminders to buckle up, drive sober, and distraction free. In addition to these signs, pavement markings will be more visible, especially in dark or wet conditions. Each Safety Corridor will be monitored for effectiveness in severe crash reduction and may be undesignated after a period of time. Safety Corridors are a Vision Zero solution in which Engineering, Enforcement, Emergency Response, and Education work together to help reach Vision Zero’s goal of zero fatalities on North Dakota roads.
