Crash Details:
Herb, along with his good friend Gary, was driving south on Highway 1 in his pickup with his boat securely attached to the hitch headed to SD for their annual fishing trip. They were merely 30 miles into their trip when they met an approaching semi pulling a belly dump trailer with 46,000 pounds of rock that had an average diameter of 3-8 inches each. As the two vehicles met, the belly dump trailer unloaded all 46,000 pounds of rock onto the highway, which began to pummel both his vehicle and boat. Sadly one rock passed through the windshield, striking him in the side of the head. Herb died a short time later at a nearby hospital. He not only managed to keep both his pickup and boat on the highway, but was also able to bring them both to a complete stop which more than likely saved the life of his passenger and good friend Gary.
