Put the Phone Away or Pay Enforcement Results in 665 Citations
STATEWIDE, N.D. – Law enforcement agencies across North Dakota issued 665 citations during the September Put the Phone Away or Pay distracted driving enforcement campaign.
Of the citations, 367 were issued for distracted driving. Additional citations included 112 for speeding, 79 for other traffic citations (such as disobeying traffic signals and equipment violations), 35 for failure to wear a seat belt and 12 for driving with a suspended/revoked license. There were also two arrests for driving under the influence and two drug-related arrests.
High visibility enforcement uses visible, coordinated patrols to deter dangerous driving behaviors. Traffic fatalities and serious injuries are largely preventable if drivers and passengers take personal responsibility, including wearing a seat belt, securing children in appropriate car seats, driving distraction-free, driving sober and following posted speed limits.
