Remember Motorcycle Safety During “Ride to Work Day” on June 18

For Immediate Release: Jun 11 2018

BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program (NDMSP) wants to remind motorists to be aware of possible increased numbers of motorcyclists on the road on Monday, June 18 as motorcyclists participate in the annual “Ride to Work Day.”

“’Ride to Work Day’ advocates and supports the use of motorcycles for transportation.  It highlights the positive value of motorcycling and that riding saves energy, helps the environment and provides a wide range of other public benefits,” said Lonnie Bertsch, ABATE Director with NDMSP. “We want to remind motorists to be extra vigilant and always check your mirrors and blind spots as more motorcycles take to the road. It’s also important for motorcyclists to do everything they can to make themselves visible and wear full protective gear.”

In North Dakota in 2017, 82% of all reported motorcycle crashes resulted in injury or death. Following these simple tips can help to save lives.

Tips for motorists to prevent a crash with a motorcyclist:
  • Look twice for motorcycles. Check all mirrors and blind spots when entering an intersection, changing lanes, passing or turning left.
  • Stay back. Motorcycles can stop more quickly than a vehicle.
  • Do not share the lane. Motorcycles have the same right-of-way as any other vehicle, including the full lane width.
  • Actively watch for motorcycles that may be hidden.

Motorcyclists can increase their safety on the roads by:
  • Wearing a DOT-compliant helmet and full protective gear. Compliant helmets are labeled with the DOT logo.
  • Wearing brightly colored clothes and reflective tape to increase visibility.
  • Taking a training course.
  • Obeying all traffic laws and be properly licensed.
  • Using hand and turn signals at every lane change or turn.
  • Riding distraction-free
  • Always riding sober
