Sheyenne Mustangs saddle up for safety as newest Vision Zero School
WEST FARGO, N.D. – Vision Zero proudly welcomed Sheyenne High School as North Dakota’s newest and largest Vision Zero School during the Mustang’s annual Field Day. An event known for school spirit, student engagement, and today, a strong commitment to traffic safety.
“Sheyenne High School joined the Vision Zero School program because we recognized the immense role we can play in reaching students in our area,” said Sheyenne Assistant Principal Ryan Bodell. “By raising awareness and promoting safer driving habits, we aim to lead by example and help reduce distracted driving in our community.”
During the event, six Sheyenne student leaders were recognized and celebrated for their leadership in promoting Vision Zero’s traffic safety message, with a special emphasis on reducing distracted driving within their school and community.
“Being part of the Vision Zero School program means I am helping to create safer roads not just for us, but for the students who come after us,” said Sheyenne Junior Madison Aadland. “If we start changing attitudes about distracted driving now, we can build a better future for the next generation of drivers.”
The event featured a dynamic “Vision Zero Zone,” where hundreds of students engaged in hands-on learning. Activities included a rollover simulator, a distraction challenge, an impaired driving pedal cart course, traffic safety trivia and more interactive stations. This area allowed students to explore the risks of unsafe driving in a controlled, educational environment.
Strong community support helped make the event’s “Vision Zero Zone” a success. Safety partners including the North Dakota Highway Patrol, West Fargo Police Department, the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association and the North Dakota Department of Transportation were on-site to emphasize the importance of always making safe choices whether behind the wheel or as a passenger.
Sweatshirts for the student leaders and event trivia prizes were generously sponsored by Elite Steering Driving School.
Sheyenne joins a growing list of Vision Zero Schools dedicated to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries in North Dakota. Schools interested in participating in Vision Zero Schools can contact the NDDOT Safety Public Information Program Manager at lwahlman@nd.gov.
