Warmer Weather Yields Increased Pedestrian, Bike Traffic

BISMARCK, ND – The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) reminds motorists to share the road and stay alert for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists as the weather gets warmer and COVID-19 social distancing continues in North Dakota.
“North Dakota provides plenty of open space to enjoy the spring weather while practicing social distancing. Prepare to see an increase in walkers, runners, bikers and motorcyclists,” said NDDOT Safety Director Karin Mongeon. “The increased presence of these citizens near and on our roadways presents the potential for crashes. All road users should take personal responsibility and follow the rules of the road in order to prevent these incidences.”
Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists are at more risk when involved in a motor vehicle crash as they do not have the protection of an enclosed vehicle, or vehicle safety features like seat belts and airbags. Motorists should remain alert for all road users by focusing on the road, sidewalk, crosswalk, and remembering that bicyclists and motorcyclists have the same rights as a motorist.
It is vital that all users recognize a shared responsibility in order to achieve the goal of Vision Zero, zero fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roads.
In North Dakota in 2019, one motorcyclist was involved in a crash nearly every two days, a pedestrian was involved in a crash every three days, while a bicyclist was involved every four days.
