Warmer weather means more pedestrians and cyclists

For Immediate Release: Jul 24 2024
STATEWIDE, N.D. – As the height of summer approaches, motorists are reminded to be mindful of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists on North Dakota roadways.

Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists are at greater risk when involved in a motor vehicle crash as they do not have the protection of an enclosed vehicle, or vehicle safety features like seat belts and airbags. Motorists should remain alert for all road users by focusing on the road, sidewalk and crosswalk.

Preliminary data from 2023 shows there were 10 pedestrian fatalities and 16 motorcycle fatalities in North Dakota. As of July 19, 2024, there have been two pedestrian fatalities and seven motorcycle fatalities.

“Historically in North Dakota, motor vehicle fatalities are more common in warm weather months than cold weather months. Let’s share the road with all users, follow the rules of the road and buckle up so everyone makes it home to their loved ones,” said Karin Mongeon, Highway Safety Division Director.

It is vital that all road users recognize a shared responsibility to achieve the goal of Vision Zero, to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roadways.
