School Bus Safety

The way to school shouldn’t be in harm’s way.

School buses are one of the safest vehicles on the road. Less than 1% of all traffic deaths involve children on school transportation vehicles (NHTSA). However, it’s important for all drivers, as well as parents and students, to understand school bus safety.  


North Dakota Law for Driving Around School Buses 

Passing a school bus with its lights flashing or stop arm extended is $250 for the first offense. Second or subsequent offense wtihin five years has a minimum of $750.

For Motorists:

  • Flashing Red Lights & Stop Arm: Drivers must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended. 
  • Two-Lane Roads: Drivers must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended. 
  • Multi-Lane Highways: On multi-lane highways, including those with a center turn lane, all traffic in both directions must stop, except on divided highways where traffic approaching from the opposite direction is not required to stop.
  • Controlled-Access Highways: Drivers do not have to stop if the school bus is in a loading zone where pedestrians are not permitted to cross.
  • Proceeding Safely: Drivers should not proceed until the school bus retracts its stop arm, the red lights stop flashing or the driver signals to proceed.
Please note, even after the bus resumes motion, drivers should proceed with caution and be aware of children who may still be on or near the roadway.
