Oakes High School

Local and state law enforcement agencies, in conjunction with the North Dakota Department of Transportation, teamed up with Oakes High School teens to bring awareness about their behaviors while driving and being a passenger. The day was a project-based learning event for the 7th-12th grade students of Oakes Public School. Throughout the day, the students participated in several activities that showed them the dangers of texting while driving, in addition to being impaired while driving. Some of the activities were Pedal Car Driving Course provided by the Grand Forks Sheriff's Department; Virtual Reality Googles; AAA Driving Simulator; Smash Match; Distraction Mat; Outdoor Driving Course with Dickey County Sheriff's Department; Oakes Police Department and North Dakota Highway Patrol. The event was held in October during National Teen Driver Safety Week, and it was also the week before Homecoming. It was a great time to educate students on how driving while distracted or impaired could severely impact their lives.
